The Gaut Mysteries
A series of Murder mysteries set in the Viking Age on the Isle of Man by Gillian Warren
Vikings! To most people, a race of lawless, murderous, heathen savages, yet in English the very word "Law" comes from their language, Norse. Their laws distinguised between deliberate murder, carrying the death penalty, and accidental man-slaying.
On the Isle of Mann in the 10th century, Viking raiders had become settlers. Many had forsaken their old gods to become Christians, but mistrust still soured relationships between native Gaels and Norse, Christian and Heathen.
In a society where every free man went armed, and honour mattered, violence was not uncommon. When a man dies in a tavern-brawl, the killer is easily identified, but not all deaths are so simple.
How, without Grissom's CSI forensic science, can a killer be discovered, and brought to justice?
